The story of NAMI of McHenry County began in 1987 with a small group of families.   They began meeting together to seek mutual support, share their experiences of living with mental illness, and educate themselves and others about what families encounter when a family member has a mental illness.  None of that group realized then what an impact they would have in the community, and how the lives of so many would be changed

NAMI quickly grew to serve many families in McHenry County, offering an array of free services including support groups, family & community education and advocacy.

Through support from the McHenry County Mental Health Board, the Ami House group home was established in 1992, and a second home, Phoenix House, was opened in July 1996.

NAMI’s annual walk for mental illness began in 2002.  The walk raises funds to help support NAMI programs in McHenry County.

Today, NAMI of McHenry County is one of over 41 affiliates in the State of Illinois, and is part of the national NAMI organization.
